Defining Psychic Ability

It can be difficult to pinpoint and offer and exact explanation: What is Psychic Ability? Because it can generate some of the most heated debates and varying opinions you?ll ever find on any subject. Like religion, spiritual sense is an amazingly personal thing. The experiences reported as well as the perception of right and wrong, just or unjust, can cover such a wide range of ground that it?s impossible to really offer any kind of complete or accurate description that rings true to everyone.

The one comforting factor in trying to define what it means to be Psychic, is that there are some pretty common threads and themes throughout most beliefs systems that involve some kind of spiritual or higher awareness. Of course none of these need to be exclusive or eliminatory, and I think it is a common occurrence that new or different beliefs and outlooks are accepted in the metaphysical community, so long as they are not harmful to others.

One could fill hundreds of pages with thoughtful, accurate comparison of the differences in beliefs when it comes to Psychic ability, however I have chosen to focus on the similarities, both to ease my task, and to offer a more positive approach. In identifying the commonly held beliefs, we identify the things that bring us together.

The dictionary offers a pretty objective description of the concept of Psychic ability (under the definition of psychical, as psychic is a word depicting an individual with Psychic abilities)

Of, relating to, affecting, or influenced by the human mind or psyche; mental: psychic trauma; psychic energy.
1. Capable of extraordinary mental processes, such as extrasensory perception and mental telepathy.

2. Of or relating to such mental processes.

Going beyond that one can say that psychic ability is often characterized as a sense or a sight. There are many words for the different types of Psychic intuition such as clairvoyant (seeing things, visions, through Psychic ability), clairaudient (hearings things, messages, through Psychic ability), clairsentient (feeling, sensing physical things through Psychic ability), etc. Essentially Psychic ability is the capacity for the psyche (the mind) to absorb information in a way that is outside the realm of traditional understanding (ie: sight, touch, taste, smell relating to things that are concrete). So defining the process can be pretty complicated, but somehow it doesn?t need to be defined. Much like religion, faith and confidence in belief is usually all a person who possesses or believes in Psychic ability, needs. Proof or no proof, they stay who they are and know what they know, and their understanding and intuition is of just as much use to them in life if not more so than any of their other skills.
