My Tarot Decks and InformationI fell in love with my first Tarot deck at age 13. That may seem young but keep in mind that I had been admiring and coveting my mother was a prolific Taroist, and I had admired her cards ever since I was a little girl. It was a balmy Summer Saturday, the first in my young life where I felt ready to strike out on my own. I gathered up the dollars and cents I had earned baby sitting and headed over to the local mall on my bike. The book store had only one type of deck and it was kept behind the counter, so I had to ask the lady if I could buy it. She seemed puzzled I think because most girls my age were buying Sweet Valley high novels and fashion magazines; but she smiled kindly and took the lone Rider-Waite deck that was left on the shelf and placed it on the counter. I stared at it in awe of the power that lay before me, stunned by the bright yellows and reds that decorated the box, a sharp contrast to the subtle neutral colors of my mother's worn deck. I gave the lady my money, collected my change and rode home quickly, not even taking a moment to look at my purchase. When I got home I stole away to my room and stayed there for several hours. It was ritual like for me, or at least it seemed like it should be. I was full of excitement but couldn't help questioning everything I was doing. I pulled the cards out of the box and unsealed them carefully, doing everything as respectfully as I could, as though someone was watching my every move, judging my ability to handle such responsibility. I carefully studied the little booklet that came with the cards and quickly found out that it was painfully brief and answered very few of my questions. I decided at that point that despite my desire to do this on my own, I should consult my mother for guidance. She was ecstatic to see what I had done. She explained to me that while she always suspected I would be following in her footsteps, she had never wanted to push anything on me, and had stepped back in order to allow me to find my own way. She told me of our rich family history and our connection to divination and spirituality. She had much to share but also impressed on me the importance of following my own path. And so it began, my journey as a Tarot reader and Psychic, aided and supported by my mother's loving guidance, driven by an unrelenting desire to fulfill my destiny and become who I am today. Over the years I acquired several beautiful, interesting and meaningful decks although I am by no means a collector. Below are images of the decks I currently own although the main ones I use in readings are the Ancient Minchiate Etruria and the Ancient Tarot de Marseilles, which have been in my family for years and have very strong historical attachments to our roots.
Learning Tarot isn't something easy that is done overnight. There is no one right way to do it, but there are many wrong ways that won't work for you. The trick is to be passionate about it, use a deck you connect with and absorb all the information you can on the subject, from people, books, websites and the cards themselves. Reading Tarot is an ongoing learning experience and you should be prepared for the humbling discoveries you will make, even years after you began.
